This unique program, which has been in existence since March 2002, offers 3 levels of direct instruction in English Literacy/Civics in East Baton Rouge Parish. Adult Basic Education programs are also offered, and EL/Civics students are encouraged to participate in the Adult Basic Education program to further enhance their English proficiency.
This 12-month program offers students more than 60 hours of instruction per semester which incorporates speaking, listening, reading and writing along with life skills (such as preparation for the workplace), and civics education. Multiple levels of instruction are offered and students are allowed to matriculate through the class levels and/or attend more than one level of instruction which increases the potential number of class hours available to students.
The program, which has been constructed based on the proven success of previous EL/Civics programs, employs strategies which incorporate outstanding hands-on instruction to the ESL population.
